Welcome to the Hilton C. Buley Library. I hope that you will take full advantage
of the broad array of library collections and services.
The Library currently holds over 610,000 items – more than 457,000 bound
volumes, 7,000 non-print media, and 110,000 microform volume-equivalent items.
Current subscriptions include 2,165 print and 18,372 electronic periodical subscriptions.
The collection is growing by approximately 10,000 volumes each year. The Library
also provides access to more than 125 electronic indexes, databases, and full-text
resources to serve your study and research needs. An online catalog shared with
all CSU libraries and the Connecticut State Library expands available print
and media resources to over two million volumes. SCSU students also have borrowing
privileges at the University of Connecticut. In addition, the library provides
interlibrary loan service for all students.
A variety of library services are available to support and enhance the access
and use of information resources in all formats. The Reference Librarians offer
research assistance, providing needed information using the most effective,
innovative, and traditional techniques with both print and electronic resources.
Instruction in the use of the library is offered on many levels, at the Reference
Desk and as part of the Library's bibliographic instruction program. Instructional
services meet a range of needs – basic freshman orientation, library tours,
basic and subject-specific course-integrated instruction sessions, and individual
research appointments.
It is an exciting time to join the SCSU academic community. The Library has
prepared a building program for construction nearly doubling the library space
and refurbishing the existing building to meet 21st-Century needs. Construction
is expected to begin in fall 2004. Library collections are growing rapidly,
as we strive to provide the most current, authoritative, and comprehensive information
in both traditional print formats and developing online resources. Library services
are expanding to meet growing expectations.
I hope you will spend many rewarding hours in the library, building on classroom
learning and exploring the world of information. Best of luck!
