Acting as both supervisor to student staff and assistant to full-time staff, the University Assistant position walks a middle ground between part-time student staff and full-time staff. As a University Assistant, specific duties often vary, but maturity, leadership, and experience in the area assigned are required. By acting as the front-line to many everyday Lab Assistant concerns in one instance to providing superior technical support or training to a faculty, staff, or students in another, the University Assistant ensures that the high standards of excellence within the SCSU Academic Computing department are both advanced and maintained across time.
 
     
  What are the prerequisites to the University Assistant position?  
     
 
  • Demonstrated above-average customer service skills

  • Ability to work with both student population and faculty members professionally and effectively

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and supervise others
    prior student worker position or other related employment positions

  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new skills
    receiving on-the-job and formal training sessions
    conducting of training for others


  • Professional appearance/demeanor
    demonstrated maturity needed to take respective job seriously
 
     
  What will University Assistants learn?  
     
 

Throughout your tenure as a University Assistant you can expect to receive extensive training in the software and hardware tools used at the university. Exact skills acquired depend largely on the position and direct supervisor to which the UA is employed.

For example, a University Assistant employed in a techical/support position would be expected to have a general understanding of hardware repair, installation, and configuration as well as software diagnosis and usage. Throughout his/her tenure as a University Assistant, he/she might also learn how to remove and install various hardware periphereals, erase and restore a hard drive, setup or troubleshoot a faculty member's department printer, or even teach a class on a familiar software suite to his/her fellow student workers.

Though many University Assistant positions are available through official campus job listings, most Academic Computing UA positions are filled as result of an individual working several successful semesters as a Lab Assistant or student worker.
