How to set up Windows ME network configurations for ResNet.
 
Solution:
Right click on your Internet Explorer icon on your desktop and click properties.
Click on the Connections tab.

Here you will set up how your computer connect to the Internet. In the Dial-up
settings
box, there are several ways to connect to the Internet. These
are only dial-up connections, meaning you must use a modem to connect to the
Internet. There are three choices below this box. Select the Dial whenever
a network connection is not present
so when you bring your computer home
during break, you can still connect to the Internet without having to make any
changes.

Click on LAN Settings button. Your box should be set up exactly as the
one shown below with all chekc boxes unchecked.

Click OK on the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings box and then on
Internet Properties box.




CONFIGURING YOUR NETWORK PROPERTIES

Begin by clicking on the Start menu and then Settings and then Control Panel.
The following window should appear.

Click on the Network to get this box:

Click on Client for Microsoft Networks and click Properties. The following
box appears:

Make sure the "Log on to Windows NT DOMAIN" is not checked. the Network
logon options does not have to change. Click OK
On the Network box, scroll down to find your Ethernet Adapter listed. In
the box below, it is listed as an Intel Pro/100+ MiniPCI card. Your card will
be listed as long as it has been installed correctly.

The item on the top line of the box above has a little icon next to it. This
item is an adapter. The next four items are TCP/IP protocols. We are looking
for your Ethernet Card under the TCP/ip protocol section. You will find a
TCP/IP protocol for each adapter in your computer. Click on the TCP/IP
protocol for your Ethernet adapter and click on Properties. You should
see the box displayed below.

On the IP Address tab you should have Obtain an IP address
automatically
selected. If you would like to you can have the Detect
connection to network media
checked but it is not required. Click on the
WINS Configuration and follow the instructions below.

Here you should select the Use DHCP for WINS Resolution option at the
bottom of the window. Click on the Gateway tab.

Remove any Installed gateways listed. Click on the DNS Configuration tab.
You should Disable DNS.

Once you have completed all the steps you can click OK.

On the Network box, click on the Identification tab and set up the fields as displayed below:

  • Computer Name: fill in your last name and first initial.
  • Workgroup: fill this in as SCSU-Resnet.
  • Computer Description: this should be your building and room number.

    Once you have completed this section, you should be all set with your network
    properties. Click the OK. There should be a prompt to restart your
    computer. You should allow it to restart. Once your computer has restareded,
    follow the directions to check your IP Address.

    Click on Start and choose Run. Type command in the box and click OK.

    You should see the following box:

    Type ipconfig at the blinking cursor to get similar results below.

  • If you have an IP address that begins with 10.80 you are ready for ResNet.
  • If you have an IP address that begins with 169.254 or is 0.0.0.0, your
    computer is not properly configured and you need to check all the steps or
    require a working Resnet connection.
  • If you have Media Disconnected, you either do not have a cable plugged in
    from your computer to the wall or there is something wrong with your jack
    in the wall.

    Type exit to leave this window.
